The 600 Series and the 700 Series ran from 1996 to 2009. The 601, 611, 632 and 650 are the cabinets we still see weekly in Ortega, Avondale, San Marco, Mandarin, Deerwood and the older parts of Ponte Vedra Beach. They were built to be repaired, they have been repaired, and a great many of them are still holding 38°F and 0°F thirty years on.
They are also entirely outside every manufacturer warranty, including the twelve-year limited sealed-system coverage. That changes the conversation and we would rather have it up front.
Architecture
The full-size over-and-under cabinets in this generation carry two sealed systems: two compressors, two evaporators, the fresh-food circuit at 38°F and humid, the freezer circuit at 0°F and dry. A warm refrigerator over a working freezer is a single-circuit fault, on these cabinets exactly as on a modern one.
Condenser location differs by series. The 600 Series is top-mounted behind a grille at the head of the cabinet. The 700 Series is bottom-mounted. Confirm at the cabinet before cleaning; on a thirty-year-old kitchen the layout is not always what the owner remembers.
EC40
The 600 Series, the 648PRO, the 700 Series and the IC-27 all report EC40, which flags excessive freezer compressor run time. The published split is the most useful troubleshooting rule in the whole legacy range.
If the freezer compartment is less than ten degrees above setpoint, treat it as a restricted condenser. Clean it and re-check. If it is more than ten degrees above setpoint, and no door has been left standing open, the cabinet needs a technician rather than a vacuum cleaner.
Do not clear the code before the visit. The stored code carries timing, and on a cabinet with two circuits and thirty years of history, timing is often what separates a slow refrigerant loss from an abrupt failure.
EE on the 600 Series
If a 600 Series cabinet displays EE, Sub-Zero’s own position is that there is no consumer troubleshooting for it. That is not a hedge on our part; it is the published guidance. Leave the code showing and book the visit.
Age, parts and honesty
Parts availability on this generation is mixed. Gaskets, fan motors, defrost components, thermostats and hinges are generally obtainable. Some control assemblies are not, and we do not publish board part numbers as definitive because fit on this range is serial-dependent and the wrong board is money spent twice.
Where a part is genuinely unavailable we say so on the first visit rather than ordering hopefully and calling back in three weeks. On a cabinet this old that is the only decent way to work.
Repair or replace
There is a real threshold here and it is worth stating plainly. A 600 or 700 Series cabinet with a failed fan motor, a bad defrost heater, a frozen drain or tired gaskets is almost always worth repairing: the cabinet body, the doors and the panels are still good, and replacement means new cabinetry work as well as a new appliance.
A 600 or 700 Series cabinet with a failed compressor or a leaking evaporator on one circuit is a different question, because none of that is covered any more and the sealed-system labor is substantial. We will quote it, we will tell you what the cabinet is likely to give you afterwards, and we will not talk you into it.
Water
These cabinets take the push-in filter cartridge. The current part is 7045454, which replaced 7023812; the older 7005017 and 7023811 are discontinued. Read the housing before ordering, because the twist-in filters used on later cabinets do not fit.
Ice production needs the freezer at or below 5°F, with 0°F recommended. On a cabinet of this age the compartment temperature is read before the ice system is touched at all, because a freezer drifting to 8°F keeps food frozen and quietly stops harvesting, and that is a refrigeration repair rather than an ice maker one.
