Two door complaints arrive weekly and neither of them is a fault. A third one is, and it is worth being able to tell them apart before booking anything.
There is no lock
The most common call of all: the door will not open, and the owner is convinced there is a child lock, a service lock or a control lockout engaged.
There is no lock on these doors. Not on the food cabinets, not on the wine cabinets, not on the undercounter units.
What is happening is physics. The cabinet has a genuinely airtight seal. When the door closes, a volume of relatively warm room air is trapped inside. That air cools, and cooling air contracts. The pressure inside drops below the pressure outside, and the difference presses the door against the gasket with real force.
It resolves itself. Air bleeds back past the seal, the pressure equalises, and the door opens normally. That takes seconds, not minutes.
The damage comes from not waiting. A door pulled hard against a vacuum stresses the gasket at its mounting, distorts the handle mounting on heavy custom panels, and over time produces the exact seal problem the owner will call about next year. Wait, then open it.
An honest exception: if a door pulls hard like this every single time and takes noticeably longer than a few seconds, the compartment may be running colder than its setpoint, which is worth reading a thermometer over.
Soft-close hinges take about three months
Designer doors use soft-close hinges that pull the door shut through the last part of its travel. From roughly zero to sixty degrees open, the door should close itself.
New hinges are stiff. That is deliberate and it is also just how the mechanism beds in. The action improves noticeably over about three months of ordinary use, and a brand-new installation that feels heavy is usually not faulty.
The corollary is more useful. A door that used to close itself and no longer does has changed, and change has causes. The common ones are a heavier panel fitted during a kitchen refresh, a handle moved further from the centreline, a hinge that has dropped, or, at coastal addresses, hinge hardware that has corroded and stiffened.
Most of those are adjustments. Some are hardware. Very few are refrigeration.
When a door genuinely is the fault
The third case is the one that costs money if it is ignored, and it presents as a temperature complaint rather than a door complaint.
A gasket that has taken a compression set lets a steady stream of room air into the compartment. In this climate that air is humid, which means the compartment gains both heat and moisture. The visible results are a compartment reading several degrees warm, frost around the opening, frost building on the evaporator faster than the defrost cycle can clear it, and eventually a frozen drain because the defrost cycle is producing more meltwater than the drain path was designed for.
On drawer units this is the single most common cause of a warm drawer. A drawer carries its entire seal on a moving mechanism, with a heavy panel and a handle hanging off the front. Runners develop lift at the end of travel, the drawer front tilts a few degrees, and the top of the gasket comes off its face while the sides still look perfect.
What we check
Gasket compression along all four sides with the door closed. Hinge condition and adjustment. Panel weight and handle position, particularly where cabinetry work has been done. Runner travel through the full stroke on drawer units. Cabinet squareness in the opening.
Then the compartment temperature, because a door problem that has been running for months has usually produced a frost or drain problem as well.
