Wine storage sits in a different part of the temperature range from everything else we service. There is no freezer, no defrost cycle to fail, and no 0°F compartment. The cabinet is asked to hold a narrow band well above freezing, hold it steadily, and hold it without vibrating or drying the corks. That changes both the failure list and what counts as a fault.
Two-zone cabinets are the norm, with an upper and a lower zone set independently. Wine storage does not use the dual-refrigeration arrangement found in the full-size food units, so the diagnosis is different again: when both zones drift together, look at the single sealed system and the condenser; when one zone alone drifts, look at air management and that zone’s sensing.
Drift is the fault, not failure
Most wine calls are not dead cabinets. They are cabinets that have quietly moved three or four degrees off setpoint and stayed there. The owner notices when the two zones converge, because a cabinet set to 55°F above and 45°F below is doing something visible and useful, and losing that separation is obvious.
Ambient temperature does more of this than people expect. A cabinet installed in a garage, a butler’s pantry with a closed door, or an outdoor kitchen enclosure in Northeast Florida is working against summer ambients that no wine unit is rated for. Before condemning a component we measure the air at the grille, because a cabinet fighting a 95°F room will run continuously and still fall short, and no part replacement fixes that.
The condenser, and where it is
Condenser location on wine cabinets is not consistent, and getting it wrong wastes a visit. The 430 carries a top-mounted condenser behind a flip-up grille, like a Classic or legacy Built-In food cabinet. The 427 is bottom-mounted. Undercounter wine units draw through a front grille at the base. Cleaning interval is the same six to twelve months, halved in a house with pets, and unnecessary on a cabinet less than six months old.
Coastal installations corrode faster. In 32082, 32250, 32266, 32233 and the St. Augustine waterfront ZIPs, salt aerosol reaches the condenser through the same grille that carries the cooling air, and aluminium fin stock reacts to it. On a cabinet that has spent ten years two blocks from the ocean, fin corrosion is often the whole answer.
Condensation on the glass
A glass door is a thermal weak point by design. Some cabinets manage it with a perimeter heater; all of them depend on a gasket that seals evenly along four sides. Condensation on the inside of the glass points at a seal that is no longer compressing, a door that has dropped on its hinge, or a humidity load from an unsealed subfloor or an adjacent dishwasher vent.
Sub-Zero cabinets have no door lock. The vacuum that forms as air inside cools makes a door feel locked for a few seconds after it is closed, and it releases as the pressure equalises. That is normal and should not be forced. If a wine door consistently refuses to seat on the last inch, the hinge or the panel weight is the place to look.
What we do not do
We do not service cooking appliances, and we do not carry them. Refrigeration only. That includes built-in and integrated cabinets, freezer columns, wine storage, undercounter units and ice makers.
Cost and coverage
$80 flat diagnostic, credited toward the repair, with a written estimate before any part is ordered. Genuine OEM parts. Our own warranty is 90 days on labor and 365 days on parts.
If the cabinet is inside the manufacturer’s twelve-year limited sealed-system window, the covered sealed-system part is still supplied parts-only in years six through twelve, obtained from the manufacturer directly, with labor paid by the homeowner. On a wine cabinet that has lost its charge, that distinction usually decides whether the repair is worth doing.
